Information for New Scouts

Welcome to Boy Scout troop 395. We are located in the United Methodist Church at 8 W. Main St. The Scout Room is in the basement. We meet every Tuesday from 7:00 - 8:30 PM. If school is canceled on a Tuesday then the meeting is also canceled. We do not meet when the school is on break, except during the summer when we continue to meet on Tuesdays.

We have a committee meeting on the second Thursday of the month at 7 PM in the Scout Room, and all parents are invited to attend. All parents are encouraged to be on the committee. This is the best way to influence the activities of the troop.

Please fill out an application form and return it to the first meeting along with the yearly dues, which also includes a "Boy's Life" magazine subscription.

Medical forms need to be completed as soon as possible, and can be downloaded from
www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/ahmr.aspx
Parts A and B must be completed before any scout can go camping.  Part C (physical exam) must be completed before Summer Camp.  All three parts of the form, including the physical, must be completed every year.

The uniform shirt can be purchased at the Scout Shop at 7285 Poe Avenue, Dayton (next to FedEx).  This is also the location of the BSA Miami Valley Council office.  The phone number of the store is 665-1079.  Another source for supplies is online at www.scoutstuff.org.  Each scout is also required to purchase a council patch and Troop 395 numbers for the shirt, and a Scout Handbook.  The troop will furnish the epaulettes (shoulder loops), neckerchief and slide.

Scouts are required to wear the uniform shirt to all scout meetings and events.  We call this the "Class A" uniform.  In the summer we also allow "Class B" shirts to be worn to the meetings, which are Scouting-related T-shirts.  Examples are the shirts purchased at summer camp, or the Troop 395 logo shirts we will occasionally offer for sale.

Merit Badges should be handled through the scoutmaster.  He will explain what is needed to complete the requirements and give the scout the name of the merit badge counselor.  The scout will then need to call the merit badge counselor.

Court of Honor ceremonies are held in March and September.  Merit badges and rank advancement are handed out at that time.  This is a family event.  The entire family is encouraged to show their support with attendance.

The troop goes camping almost every month.  The campouts usually start on Friday night and the troop returns Sunday at about noon.  The cost of the campout is usually $20.  A commitment from the scout is needed two weeks in advance.  Fathers are encouraged to volunteer for chaperoning the campouts.

Summer camp is at the Chief Logan Reservation, about 20 miles southeast of Chillicothe.  All scouts are encouraged to attend summer camp because it is a great opportunity to earn merit badges and work on rank advancement.  It is also a lot of fun!  For more information check out the web site at http://www.skcscouts.org/chief-logan-reservation-boy-scout-summer-camp/ .

Fund-raisers are provided for the scout as means of earning money.  Each scout has their own account for money earned.  This money is used for campouts, scouting supplies, camping gear etc.  We have two main fundraisers: Christmas wreath sales in November/December, and mulch sales in the spring.
